National History Day

  • Sponsoned by: Colleen Surette

When do we meet? The second Friday of the month during Raider Time in room 339

Purpose/Mission: To build and strengthen to skills necessary for success in college and career while offering students a chance to compete on a chosen theme.  For the 2024-2025 school year the theme is “Rights and Responsibilities in History”.  Students research and decide what event, person, or situation they want to highlight through this theme.  Students choose historical topics related to this theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews, and historic sites.  After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topic’s significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances, or documentaries.

Expectations for participation: Students will adhere to the deadlines set to research, interpret, and create a project for showing at the regional, state, and national levels.  We participate in the Regional competition at Kennesaw State University, typically held at the end of February or beginning of March (Date TBD).  The State contest will take place at LaGrange University, generally at the end of March or middle of April.  The National Competition is held at the University of Maryland around June 9 – 14, 2025.  (students and anyone traveling with them are responsible for their own costs and stay).  STUDENTS ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to attend if at all possible.  Please discuss any issues with the club sponsor.
