    Cumming Elementary ESOL Program

Cumming Elementary serves students in grades K-5th in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program.

There are 6 ESOL teachers who serve these students at Cumming Elementary!

Students are given the WIDA Screener assessment when they register for school and their level of English proficiency is identified.

Language acquisition develops through stages in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We have students at all stages and levels at Cumming Elementary. Students receive instruction in inclusion and pull-out settings.

Students are assessed yearly with the ACCESS test. The results are used to determine each student’s level of language development and eligibility for the following school year.

If we can ever be of any service to you, please give us a call or email. We look forward to supporting you and our students this year.

    ESOL Information

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provides English language instruction that will allow a student to gain improved proficiency in listening, speaking, writing, reading, and comprehension so that they can experience success in their content courses and in social contexts both inside and outside of school. Students from other cultures often become acclimated to U.S. culture through language-based instruction. The Georgia Department of Education provides the following guidelines for identifying students who may be identified as an English Language Learner (ELL):

*Students whose native/home/first language is other than English

    ESOL Goal

The goal of the ESOL language instruction educational program for EL students is to increase both English language proficiency (ELP) and academic language proficiency in the content-area subject. Successful ESOL language programs focus on collaboration and shared accountability for the success of all EL students.
