    Language Arts


    Our Language Arts program is comprehensive and includes phonics and writing components.  Reading aloud, shared reading and guided reading are used daily in your child's kindergarten classroom.
     

    Reading Aloud:   The teacher reads a variety of literature aloud to the whole class.  This models appropriate reading behaviors, demonstrates reading for a purpose, and promotes oral language development.  Reading aloud also develops the child's storytelling abilities and aids in good writing practices.
     
    Shared Reading:   Using an enlarged text that all children can see, the teacher involves children in reading together.  This demonstrates reading strategies and the process of reading and gives students opportunities to participate and behave like a reader.
     
    Guided Reading:  The teacher works with a small group of children who have similar reading levels.  This provides opportunities to problem solve and use reading strategies taught from the shared reading element.

    Cindy Cupp Phonics
     
    The primary focus of phonics instruction is to help beginning readers understand how letters are linked to sounds (phonemes) to form letter-sound correspondences and spelling patterns and to help them learn how to apply this knowledge in their reading. Chestatee has adopted the Cindy Cupp phonics program. This intense, systematic phonics program will give your child the skills needed to be excellent readers.
