• 8th Grade Georgia Studies
In 8th grade, students experience an in-depth study of the state of Georgia.  The year begins with a study of the state's geography and economy.  During this unit, students learn about the characteristics of each of the state's five regions, key physical features, the state's four transportation systems, and its modern economy. The majority of the school year is spent studying Georgia's history (in the broader context of American history). Students begin their study of Georgia's history with the Mississippian Indians, the people who lived in the southeastern United States at the time of first European contact.  Students then study each of the major time periods in Georgia's history, including: exploration and colonization, the American Revolution, Westward Expansion, causes of the Civil War, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the New South era, WWI, the Great Depression and WWII, civil rights, and modern Georgia. During each time period, the focus is on how Georgia impacted the era and on how the era impacted Georgia. Georgia Studies also includes a study of state and local government. This includes the roles of the three branches of state government, the law-making process, and both the adult and juvenile justice systems.
