    Cosmetology – Three Year Pathway

The three year pathway courses are designed to introduce students to the cosmetology profession. State Board requirements including safety measures and infection control are introduced. Effective listening, communication skills and professional ethics are emphasized on a daily basis. Students will demonstrate the applications of curling, waving, haircutting, chemical processes, nail care and skin care. They may transfer credit hours they have earned to a private or technical school.

Intro to Personal Care Services  (130) Credit Hours

This two block course introduces both fundamental theory and practices of the personal care profession including nail technicians, estheticians, barbers, and cosmetologists. Emphasis will be placed on professional practices and safety. Areas addressed in this course include: state rules and regulations, professional image, bacteriology, decontamination and infection control, chemistry fundamentals, safety, Hazardous Duty Standards Act compliance, and anatomy and physiology. Students will experience basic hands on skills in each area to help them determine the pathway they are most interested in pursuing. By completing courses in the personal care services pathways, students can potentially earn credit toward the hours required by the Georgia State Board of Barbering and/or Cosmetology or hours towards their license as an esthetician or nail technician. Students will document clock hour time for the first 250 hours

    Cosmetology II  (260) Credit Hours

*Prerequisite Introduction to Personal Care Services. This is a two block course. It is designed as an intermediate level course for the Cosmetology Pathway Program of Study. The course presents intermediate skills and knowledge related to cosmetology and its scientific concepts which include the histology of the skin and hair, diseases and disorders, hair care product chemistry and intermediate first aid. Clinical activities are included in this phase of study which include wet and dry hairstyling fundamentals, hair design, thermal curling and straightening and basic permanent waving. Upon completion of 250 clock hours, students will begin providing client services and earn credit (unit) hours toward completion of the 1500 credit hours required by Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. This course provides more in-depth competencies for the co-curricular student organization Skills USA and presents integral components that should be incorporated throughout instructional strategies developed for the course. In addition, this course offers the possibility of meeting articulation alignment with technical college standards.

    Cosmetology III  (260) Credit Hours

*Prerequisite Introduction to Personal Care Services and Cosmetology Services II. This two block course is designed to introduce students to advanced scientific and artistic principles in haircutting, lash and brow tint, hair color and relaxers. The course will provide higher level skills that the students can transfer to post-secondary cosmetology schools. Students are required to meet both national and intrastate professional guidelines as designated by applicable regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and the Georgia Board of Cosmetology. Mastery of these standards through project-based learning, technical skills practice, and leadership development activities of the career and technical student organization, Skills USA, will provide students with a competitive edge for either entry into the healthcare personal care services marketplace and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice to continue their education and training. Students will continue to provide client services and earn credit (unit) hours toward completion of the 1500 credit hours required by Georgia State Board of Cosmetology.
